Amplifier blueprinting, modifications, de-modifications
When was the last time you took your amp in for a checkup?
When vacuum tube amplifiers were heavily relied upon
for audio reproduction preventative maintenance was considered essential.
Commercial sound installations, public address systems, intercoms, and
defense communication systems etc. were serviced on a routine basis
to insure trouble free operation. This practice has largely been replaced
by the "fix it when it breaks" mentality. This may be fine for solid state gear,
but if your prized vintage tube amplifier is not operating within its design specifications
you run the risk of damaging expensive and sometimes irreplaceable components such as
power and output transformers, speakers, and other original parts that may be critical
to the tone and feel of the amplifier, not to mention the value of vintage gear.
Electrolytic capacitors dry out and lose their dielectric strength over time,
this can adversely affect tone and if they fail catastrophically can ruin
expensive components in the amp.
Basic service: Routine maintenance includes:Testing tubes for emissions, mutual conductance, shorts and leakage
Checking voltages, bias currents and operating conditions
Cleaning tube sockets, potentiometers, input and output jacks and chassis
Checking components for drifted out of tolerance values, leakage or damage
Check for loose connections, cold solder joints, defective wiring etc.
Replacing defective components such as power supply and bypass electrolytic capacitors
Checking chassis hardware for loose nuts, bolts, screws, etc.
Output power, gain and distortion measurements
Bench testing and play tests using an actual instrument
Only the highest quality parts are used:Sprague Atom TVA electrolytic capacitors
Switchcraft jacks, CTS and Alpha pots
Ceramic tube sockets and carbon composition resistors for vintage correct restorations
Re-tube and bias: Price depends on the model of the ampNOS and current production tubes are available
Tube testing is also available
General repairs and troubleshooting:Repairs also done on solid state amplifiers, musical effects,
and sound reinforcement equipment
No microprocessor based effects at this time
Modification reversal:Get your vintage amp back to stock
Modifications:The tone of your amp can be shaped to suit your needs
Fender Silverface to Blackface conversion:Price depends on model and year
